“It is of great importance, when we begin to practice prayer,
not to let ourselves be frightened by our own thoughts.”
― Teresa of Ávila, The Life of Saint Teresa of Ávila by Herself

Sometimes in prayer, it’s easy to get distracted. Sometimes, it’s easy to get frightened. Sometimes, it’s easy not to pray at all. Sometimes, we just have to pick up where we left off—not condemning ourselves for getting distracted, not worrying, not thinking that our most recent choice is our final one. Realizing, if we are breathing now, we are aware—now. God is here, now.

Praying for persecuted families, daddies and mommies, sons and daughters, real, living, people that we can relate to entirely on one hand and unfathomably on the other, presents its own dilemmas. How do we pray? And what if that leads us to further questions, like, “How do I live?”.

Sometimes we’re ready for those questions because we’re hungry for change. Sometimes we’re not at all ready, because we’re tired and worn.

Here’s the good news. The answer to both questions, is here and now. Pray, here and now. Live, here and now.

Have you been distracted? Begin again. Have you been frightened? Begin again. We all have been. This doesn’t make us failures, this makes us aware of mercy and the path it blazes fiercely before us. It could make us brave.

“In Your light, we will see light.” —Psalm 36:10
